Introduction
The Diploma in Computer Based Accounting is a Diploma Programme of one year duration.
The programme is conducted over two semesters encompassing eight courses of study
(course units) and a mini project on accounting software development.
During the first semester, students are required to take four course units
(45 hours each) and during the second semester, four more course units
(2 nos. of 60 hours each and 2 nos. of 45 hours each). The study sessions will include
practical works as well. This will be followed by a mini project on accounting software
development for duration of three months.
In order to be qualified for the diploma, participants are required to obtain a pass
for each of the course units and for the mini project on accounting software
development. Successful participants will be awarded the Diploma in Computer Based
Accounting.
Rationale
Information Technology (IT) is imperative to the success of any organization in the
current dynamic and competitive business environment. In conjunction with the
development of IT, Accounting has also expanded its scope and horizons. It is evident
that in order to be successful in a career in Accounting one should be adequately
exposed to IT in general and Computer Based Applications in accounting in particular.
Subjects offered in this programme are designed to provide participants with adequate
knowledge and skills in the applications of Accounting and Finance in a computerized
environment. Thus, it is aimed to enable participants enhance their careers in the
Accounting profession by acquiring the newest knowledge and skills in relation to
Computer Based Accounting.
Objectives
The Programme of study will:
• Provide an opportunity to school leavers (after successful completion of their
advanced level examination) to enter a career in the field of IT based
Accounting;
• Provide participants with hands-on experience in computer applications in
Accounting with a view to enhance their effectiveness at work;
• Facilitate participants to make good use of available accounting resources in the
work environment; and
• Generate funds required for sustainability of activities that has been started
under the IRQUE project, aimed at enhancement of quality of undergraduate level
education.
Programme Focus
Those who seek a career in or are already engaged in Accounting/ Finance related
functions in private/ public sector organizations.
The Emerging Opportunities
At present it is difficult to find an organization which does not depend on a
computerized environment in accomplishing organizational tasks. With the advent of
computer applications the Accounting functions and processes have been appreciably
simplified. Therefore, those who in addition to the theoretical knowledge of accounting
possess proficiency in computer based accounting will have a distinct competitive edge
in the current job market conditions.

Course Descriptions
DCBA 1301: INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER APPLICATIONS
This is an introductory level course consisting of both basic theory and practice
relating to computer applications in accounting. The main objective of this course is
to provide students with a broad understating about the computer applications and their
usage in accounting field using a Spreadsheet Application Package. The course is
expected to cover the understanding of worksheet based editing, sorting and rearranging
the worksheet, data analysis by filtering and subtotal logical functions, financial
analysis, charting techniques and graphics macros and data protecting.
DCBA 1302: COMPUTER BASED ACCOUNTING
This is a specialized course that provides a comprehensive theoretical and practical
knowledge in the application of selected accounting software in business data
processing with a view to produce financial statements for both internal and external
users of accounting information. This course covers creditors, debtors, general ledger,
inventory module, and salary and budget analysis.
DCBA 1303: INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING AND DATABASE SYSTEMS
This course provides an introduction to programming and database basics and contains
two main sections. The section one contains basics of database, such as designing,
creation and manipulation of data. Further section one covers basic of business case
analysis and designing simple database system for accounting business applications.
The second section covers programming basic and interface designing for introductory
level business applications.
DCBA 1304: MULTIMEDIA TOOLS FOR PRESENTATIONS
This is an introductory level course consisting of both basic theory and practice
relating to computer applications in accounting using Multimedia tools. This course
provides technical knowledge of Presenting Accounting Information, using Interactive
animations, and Graphics designing. The course is expected to cover Object animations,
Text animations, Action scripts, Buttons, Image cropping, Cloning, Background changing,
Creative Designing by using Adobe Flash and Adobe Photoshop
DCBA 2301: INTEGRATED COMPUTER APPLICATION FOR ACCOUNTING
This is an advanced level course consisting of both theory and practice relating to
computer applications in accounting using excel spreadsheet package. This course
introduces the students accounting modelling using advanced tools and techniques
available in excel spreadsheet to develop models for accounting and finance purposes.
This course expects to cover macros, lookup functions, solver analysis and other
advanced techniques, computational issues in financial problems, optimization in
computational finance such as single and multi-period mean-variance portfolio
management, numerical techniques for valuation, pricing and hedging of financial
investment instruments such as options.
DCBA 2402: ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING
This course introduces the students to interdependent software modules with a common
central database that support basic internal business processes for finance and
accounting, human resources, manufacturing and production, and sales and marketing.
Enabled data to be used by multiple functions and business processes for precise
organizational coordination and control. The course is expected to cover Accounting,
Stock Control, Assets Register, Payroll, HRM, Time Attendance and Point of Sales.
This course emphasizes on Accounting module for students and some linkage for another
modules.
DCBA 2403: ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT
This course is aimed to extend the contents of the course “Introduction to Programming
and Database Systems”. The course will enable to improve the skills of students in
developing intermediate level information system solutions for accounting applications.
This course covers advanced programming concepts and database programming in
application development context. Rapid application development approach will be
introduced to analyze design and create intermediate accounting applications.
At the end of the course you should be able to design and administer database
applications and understand the basic principles of database management systems.
DCBA 2304: INTEGRATED WEB APPLICATIONS FOR ACCOUNTING
This course introduces the students to Web Technologies which will help them to
publish accounting information to the Web. In this regard the course will introduce
the students to Web Authoring (HTML), Web Templates handling using CSS, Client side
web page interactivity handling using JavaScript, Instructional Design Methodology
for e-commerce and Uploading Financial Statements to the web, Processing of Web
Video Clips using Adobe Premiere Pro, Writing JAVA Applets for Multimedia Web
creation, Future of Web Application, Web Accessibility Techniques, Macromedia
Dreamweaver for quick Web Authoring.
DCBA 2405 Mini Accounting Software Development Project
This course provides an opportunity for students to apply their Conceptual knowledge
into practice. Each student is required to select an application project from a
private or public sector organization. Each student has to develop a comprehensive
application package or submit a project report based on the type of application
project they select. The application package or project report should meet the
expectations of the relevant organization. Each student will be assigned a supervisor
from the department. Maximum duration of the project is three months.
Total Credits
The Diploma Programme consists of 30 credits.

The assessment of participants will be done as follows:
Assignments 30%
Final Examination 70%
Grading Scale
Student performance is graded on a 12-point scale, which ranges from E to A+. The
grading scale is shown in Table 2.
